Part of MFC Scholarship Squad in 1975 and 1976, Marchant made his senior debut with Mentone aged 15 in 1975, and was a premiership player with them the next year. He joined Melbourne full time the next year, playing four games in 1977. Despite remaining on the senior list the next year Marchant didn't play a game and was dropped from the senior list during the 1979 pre-season.

Marchant returned to Mentone in 1980, was captain in 1981, 1982 and 1984, and won seven consecutive Best and Fairest awards. Played with Springvale in 1987, before returning to Mentone as senior playing coach in 1988, then serving President of the club in 1989, while also playing in a Reserves premiership.

Appointed coach of Beaumaris in 1997, and remained there through 2003 - winning two premierships.
