Born in New South Wales, Morris moved to Victoria at a young age and attended Scotch College. Sought by Footscray after being spotted in an army competition but tied to the Demons residentially, Morris was stuck well down in the Melbourne ruck pecking order and so after one reserves match in 1941 he was cleared to Richmond in a swap for Col Galbraith.

In 1943 Morris had kicked 102 goals for South Sydney while posted to New South Wales with the Air Force. In 1944 he played with a Benalla RAAF team.

At Richmond he became one of the premier ruckmen of the competition, and won the 1948 Brownlow Medal. In 1952 Morris joined VFA side Box Hill as captain-coach, won three Best and Fairest awards and finished third in the Liston Trophy in his firs tyear.

A compulsive gambler, Morris took his own life in 1960 at the age of 39.

In 2009 Morris was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame.
