A lightning-fast player, Clark tried out for Fitzroy in 1981 but failed to make their list and turned to local football. He first joined Doncaster, then switched to Bulleen-Templestowe four years later, where he remained until being signed by Essendon midway through 1985 after they ran short of rovers. The 24 year old played the last two games of the home and away season but failed to feature in Essendon's premiership winning finals campaign. He became a regular in 1986, playing for Victoria and kicking 33 goals, despite a neck injury scare that cost him two weeks mid-season.

By 1989 Clark was out of favour at the Bombers. He played just three games before crossing to Melbourne, swapped alongside Trevor Spencer for Melbourne's first, third and seventh round selections.

Clark received two Brownlow Medal votes on debut but seriously injured a knee against his old side in Round 3, and despite breaking records by returning to the Reserves in Round 21, just 131 days after the injury, he didn't play seniors again until 1991.

Clark became a fixture of the side in 1991, but after missing the finals campaign due to a suspension in the second last home and away game was axed from the list during the 1992 pre-season. He then moved to St Kilda via the pre-season draft where he played the first six games of the season.

In 2005 he passed away from pancreatic cancer.
