Melbourne suffered their third loss of the season by under a goal and lost vital ground on the top four after two straight wins early in the year. In a game played in good conditions for football other than a muddy patch in the centre of the ground, Melbourne seemed the more skilful side through the day before falling victim to Richmond's quick play.
The game swung from end to end throughout. Melbourne dominated the first quarter, with captain Bert Chadwick defending strongly and defusing a series of early Richmond attacks. When Melbourne had their chance they took advantage of it, with Stan Wittman kicking the first goal of the game. They were the dominant side in the first term but cost themselves with poor kicking on goal, only managing four majors from 10 scoring shots.
In the second quarter Melbourne's inaccurate kicking cost them. Chadwick continued to lead a strong defence, but the Tigers kicked four goals to two to cut the margin to eight points at the long break. Melbourne got the first two goals of the third quarter but soon Richmond got on top again, kicking five goals to three to take the lead. They might have had more if hadn't been for Chadwick's defence. Melbourne had been the better and faster side, but they were always in danger from Richmond's weight advantage.
For the last quarter Melbourne altered their positions, with Streeter into the centre, Corbett to half-back and Thomas up forward to try and spark a recovery. Melbourne got within a point early in the quarter and scoring five behinds in a row, and took the lead at the 23 minute mark when Corbett went forward and snapped a goal but with the match evenly poised in the final term the home side's goalkicking deserted them and the more accurate Tigers scraped a narrow victory.
For the third time in six games Melbourne had victory snatched from them in the last few minutes.
Chadwick, Haines and Mollison were best. It was the fifth consecutive match between the two sides decided by under a goal. Haines entered the game with a cold, then suffered bruising to his legs early in the game but still kicked three goals.
