In an error ridden match Melbourne were the better side after quarter time but couldn't shake their determined opponents. John Northey had been forced to throw Garry Lyon to the backline after Footscray dominated the first quarter and kicked five goals, Lyon helped settle his side's defence and was a prime reason why the Demons nudged to a three point lead at the long break. Danny Hughes moved to the midfield and was another major player in the Melbourne fightback.
Despite their domination around the ground the scores were still level at the twenty minute mark of the last quarter before Stephen Newport kicked a goal to put his side in front, and Darren Bennett kicked his fourth to seal the deal.
Lyon, Newport and Brett Lovett were the Demons best. Todd Viney suffered a hamstring injury late in the match. John Northey praised his side, saying "The spirit is there and they are willing to keep going until they drop".
