The Cats went in as favourites and used their speed to take four points from their visit to the home of football. For the second week in a row the Demons could win neither in the air or on the ground, and Geelong were never firmly challenged after an early barrage of attacks that their defence held at bay.

The Demons struck back when they recognised they were beaten at ground level. Len Dockett moved to the centre, and by half-time the margin was just over a goal. Geelong pushed ahead further in the third term but a withering burst in the last quarter, and wasteful kicking from their opponents saw the Demons surpass their visitor's goal tally, only Geelong's behinds carried Geelong over the line. The margin was out to 16 in the final term before three goals in a row to Melbourne, capped off by Spencer putting his side back in front. They couldn't hold on and Geelong got the goal they needed to win.

The match was played on the same day as a state election, and Geelong fans caused headaches for polling officials at the Melbourne Town Hall when they arrived in large numbers to cast absentee ballots.

Best were McGrath, McMahen and Dockett. Unused reserves were McGowan and Spittle.
