After three terrible starts in a row the Demons suffered another first quarter debacle. They attacked against the soon to be minor premiers for the first few minutes without reward and from there they were dominated.
It took until midway through the second quarter to kick their first goal, and from there Fremantle only marginally pulled away as they began to go into self-preservation mode in advance of the finals.
The loss extended Melbourne's losing streak in Perth which stretched back to 2004.
Best were Viney, Jetta and Dunn.
Jack Grimes replaced Nathan Jones during the second quarter when the captain suffered an ankle injury. Jake Spencer suffered a concussion.
