Desperately needing a win to keep their finals hopes alive after losing six of their last seven the Demons laboured to a vital but unconvincing win over the Lions to keep their season going. In difficult, wet conditions, John Northey said "You worry about these games because of the conditions."

Allen Jakovich dominated up forward but was wasteful, kicking 6.7 while Darren Bennett was even more inaccurate with 1.6. Melbourne were winning first use of the ball out of the centre and the forwards were dominating their opponents but they were struggling to convert. Jim Stynes was already on top when John Ironmonger was forced out of the game and Stynes allowed to feast on two rookie ruckmen.

Despite this Melbourne went into the last quarter less than a goal in front. Stynes kicked a goal in the first minute and from there the Demons romped away with it. There were still signs that they were ailing though, with centre-half forward proving a disaster for Bennett, Earl Spalding and John Howat throughout the day.

The inaccurate Bennett and Jakovich finally got it together in the last quarter, contributing to a six goal to one quarter. The win left Melbourne one game out of the six, behind Essendon who had lost three in a row - including a shock loss to Richmond on the same day.

Best were Jakovich, J. Stynes and T. Viney
