Coming off five straight losses, the Demons travelled to Sydney with John Northey under pressure and knowing that they were already two games outside the six and would probably slip completely out of contention with a loss.

Northey's side responded with their 4th highest score in VFL/AFL history, their highest score against South Melbourne/Sydney and their highest at the SCG.

Allen Jakovich kicked 8 goals to equal the record of most by a Melbourne player against the Swans held by Norm Smith and Gerard Healy but he could have had more because he also had eight behinds. Nevertheless Northey wasn't complaining as it had taken nearly 3/4 of the season for their high draft pick to transfer the form he had shown in tearing the SANFL and Reserves competition apart to the seniors.

He could have had the record single handedly but for the first time all day showed an interest in giving off the ball to a teammate when he set Kevin Dyson up for a goal in the last term.

Jakovich and Darren Bennett kicked 15.10 between them and the Swans defence had no answers to their dual brilliance. They were ably assisted by one of the biggest Demon attacks of recent memory, also featuring Earl Spalding and Garry Lyon.

Glenn Lovett broke his wrist early in the piece and Lyon was forced off for the last two and a half quarters by what was thought to be hamstring trouble, but later turned out to be a corked thigh. It hardly hurt the Demons, who played the disappointing Swans off the park.

A dull first half gave way to a Demon avalanche where they kicked 19 goals. Sydney rolled over quickly, conceding the first three goals of the third term. The home side replied with the next three goals, before conceding six for the rest of the quarter. Jim Stynes was once again dominant but his cause was helped by the number of times the Swans turned the ball straight over to him.

Seven goals in the last term by the Swans was little consolation considering they allowed Melbourne 10 of their own - including the first six - but after the margin hit 101 points early in the last term they at least kept it below 100 and avoided the club's worst ever loss to Melbourne. A 50 metre penalty and goal to Stephen Tingay after the siren allowed Melbourne to kick their largest ever score against the Swans.

Best were Jakovich, Todd Viney and Stynes. Brett Lovett suffered a broken wrist and Garry Lyon a hamstring injury.

The win left Melbourne eighth, one win behind sixth placed North Melbourne.
