Melbourne's finals campaign effectively ended on the day when West Coast broke a club record eight game losing streak. They were suddenly two games and a considerable amount of percentage outside the top eight with less than half the season remaining.

Even after a week off for the split round Shane Woewodin was again disappointing with just ten touches, and Andrew Leoncelli spent a lot of time on the bench against a team who had five ten goal losses for the year and sported a percentage even lower than winless Fremantle. Adem Yze played his 100th consecutive game but was comprehensively beaten by Rowan Jones.

In the rain Melbourne trailed by just four points at three-quarter time, but kicking with the wind in the last term the Eagles booted four goals in the first ten minutes to put the game away. Melbourne then kicked the last four goals to draw within 9 points with two minutes left, but both Russell Robertson and Guy Rigoni then missed shots and time for a spectacular comeback ran out.

Best were Green, Brown and Rigoni. David Neitz was fined $3000 for wrestling.

Neale Daniher refused to rule out a finals appearance, but at 5-8 his side's chances hopes were rapidly diminishing.
