Two of the three worst teams in the competition came together at the MCG and played out a thrilling draw which left the Demons last. At quarter time it looked like the home side were going to turn their teamwork advantage into a big win, but they failed to double their score in the last three quarters. By half time the Tigers were within 10 points, and had taken a lead at three quarter time.
The two sides kicked three goals each in the final term. 20th man Thomson goalled to put Melbourne ahead, but Richmond equalised. Ken Albiston had a shot that missed scoring a behind by inches and he match ended with the two sides locked together for Melbourne's second Round 12 draw in a row.
Marquis, Williams and Albiston were best. Williams had to leave the field after crashing to the ground while taking a big mark.
