Coming off two straight losses, the Demons needed to re-establish themselves as a finals side, and Jeff Farmer gave them the spark that they needed with three goals in the first quarter - including the goal of the year. He picked up the ball in a rare foray to half back, went forward, received the ball back, sprinted forward, took a bounce that didn't quite come off, regathered and then bombed a torp in wet conditions from 50 metres out.
Farmer's goal bought the crowd to their feet, but on the same day he was also reported for striking Shane Crawford. Farmer was suspended for three matches, which took into account a 1997 striking suspension and 1995 reprimand for making an insulting gesture.
Farmer was the spark which helped the Demons kick seven goals to two points before the Hawks got two late goals to make the gap more respectable.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the game was the performance of the rookies. Daniel Ward, Matthew Bishop, Troy Longmuir and Craig Smoker were all impressive and Guy Rigoni continued his excellent work.
Of the senior players, Anthony Ingerson kept the dangerous Jason Dunstall to two goals.
Any chance of a Hawk comeback was shattered when the heavens opened and the ground was pelted with heavy rain during the last quarter. Just to top off his big day Farmer kicked a sealer in the last quarter with a banana kick from a ludicrous angle.
Best were Farmer, White and Lyon. David Schwarz was forced from the field with hamstring cramp.
Neale Daniher said: "It was a terrific day for our football club. We were really under the pump from the football community. We're very pleased to be 7-4 at the half-way mark."
