Melbourne came out of their bye week with six wins from eight games but were faced with the difficult task of continuing their good form in their first ever game at Football Park against the Crows.

Boom full-forward Allen Jakovich was back in the team for the first time since Round 1 after dominating the reserves competition and back on the ground where he had done so much damage in the SANFL but the combination of a rare Friday night game, an interstate trip and the desperate Crows ruined any hopes for a happy homecoming and he was booed off the field at the end of the night.

Adelaide always had the edge but until midway through the third term it was still anybody's game and the Demons were still a chance of pinching it. The Crows extended their lead to 27 points at the last change but had lost a week earlier from a similar position. The comeback never came.

John Northey was forced to swap his forwards around to try and get some excitement into his team - Darren Bennett was being well beaten by former teammates Danny Hughes - and Garry Lyon went forward while Darren Cuthbertson wound up in the backline.

John Northey said "we just never got our game going at all, which is a credit to Adelaide. I thought we had the ball enough but we couldn't find a winner in attack."

Best were J. Stynes, Lyon and Dyson. Steven Clark was reported for striking but found not guilty. Rod Owen was carried from the field with a knee injury in what would be his last game for the club.
