Melbourne came back from the bye, and at the first change of ends it was like they were still on their week off. Despite attacking in ragged fashion and missing chances in the first few minutes, Carlton opened a 34 point lead and kept the Demons scoreless. The visitors chopped a goal off the margin at the end of the match, but it was as much to do with bad kicking for goal by the Blues as anything.

The Demon attack was struggling to break through Carlton's defence, and midway through the second quarter the lead stood at 7.5 to nothing. It looked like there was a record score on the way, but Melbourne rebounded to win the rest of the game 10.7 to 6.12. After an even third term, Carlton lost energy in the last quarter and let Melbourne chip away at the lead with three final term goals to seven behinds.

Best were La Fontaine, Ted Cordner and Powell. 19th man Franklin replaced Matthews (leg injury) in the first quarter.
