Beginning his big league career with Port Adelaide as a 24-year-old centreman in 1927, Conole played 61 games for the Magpies - including the 1928 premiership victory over Norwood - and played one game for South Australia before travelling to Victoria. He was also a cricketer with the Port Adelaide club.
Conole moved to Victoria at the start of 1930, but had to wait until June to residentially qualify to play with Melbourne. Upon applying for a permit he had to deny suggestions that he'd been offered money or a job to sign with the club. He played eight games in his first year, before a broken thumb kept him out of the last game.
He was used as a half-back and occasional ruckman until retiring at the end of 1933.
