Having played Reserves for Collingwood before World War II, Raymond Alfredo Daniel Jones moved to New South Wales as part of his duties in the navy. There he played for the Sydney Naval club, before returning to Victoria at the end of the conflict. He was approached by St Kilda and Essendon but returned to Collingwood. After one senior game, Jones was a surprise selection to Collingwood's 1946 semi-final side. He played 22 games, usually as a defender, for the Magpies across three seasons.

While simultaneously studying architecture at the University of Melbourne, Jones played one game for the Demons in 1949. While his football career failed to take off he soon became a well-known architect.

Jones moved to Western Australia in 1951, joining South Fremantle. He played in a premiership with them in 1953 before beginning his own architecture practice.
