After a career with the Eagles which consisted of one game and one handball, Johnson missed the entire 2004 season after suffering a broken leg. At the end of that year sought a trade back to Victoria and the Demons, needing a ruckman to team up with Jeff White and Mark Jamar after losing Darren Jolly to Sydney traded him for a second round selection.

In 2005 Johnson was sparingly used by the senior side, but won the JJ Liston Medal for his performances with Sandringham and played in their VFL premiership side that year. His second season with the Demons in 2006 was wrecked by a shoulder injury which required a reconstruction. He then injured it again while attempting a comeback at Sandringham and played only two games for the year.

Needing to improve to retain his place on the list, Johnson was better in 2007 and played 16 matches for the year. He followed up with a breakout year in a disappointing 2008 side but couldn't cement his spot in 2009 and was dropped multiple times throughout the season, including for Round 22.

Despite a chronic shortage of ruckmen to play alongside Jamar in 2010, the Demons often chose to play with one specialist big man and a number of fill-in tall forwards. This kept Johnson out of the side for the first six weeks of the season before he returned for two games and was dropped again. He appeared in six consecutive games late in the year but was dropped from the side again after round 20 and delisted at the end of the year.

Despite training with the Demons in an attempt to win his spot on the list back, Johnson was not redrafted and was instead chosen by Hawthorn in the inaugural Training Squad Draft which allowed them to shortlist him for the final spot on their list before the 2011 season.

He was promoted to the Hawks list before the last Home and Away game of the 2011 season and kicked the sealing goal in Hawthorn's narrow win over Gold Coast. It was his only game for the Hawks that year and he was delisted at the end of the season.

In 2012 he returned to the WAFL to join East Perth, where he played state football and won their best and fairest award. He retired at the end of 2016.
