The former Collingwood premiership assistant was named as the 25th full time Melbourne FC VFL/AFL coach on September 17, 2011.

Making his AFL debut with Geelong in 1990, Neeld played 48 games over four seasons before moving to Richmond in 1994 where he added a further 26 games until end his AFL career at the end of 1996.

Coached Old Geelong from 1997 to 1999, then four consecutive premierships with Ocean Grove led to three years as coach of the TAC Cup side Western Jets before joining Collingwood as an assistant in 2008. He coached the Pies backline before becoming their midfield coach in the 2010 premiership year.

Neeld beat out a field including former Collingwood captain Scott Burns for the job at the Demons, and Melbourne secured him while he was still in the running for coaching positions at Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs.

After battling a tough off-season featuring the legal troubles of Liam Jurrah and the death of Jim Stynes, a horror performance against Brisbane in his coaching debut was followed by a controversy where he was forced to answer to false allegations about his treatment of indigenous players.

His team never hit any sort of form and with injuries beginning to take their toll in the second half of the season they struggled to four victories, three against the two expansion clubs as well as a surprise win over Essendon.

After a disappointing start to 2013, including a 148 point loss to Essendon and a number of 10 goal defeats Neeld was dismissed as coach on Monday 18 June - halfway through his initial three year contract - having won just 15.15% of his matches in charge.

In 2014 he worked as Talent Manager for the Eastern Ranges TAC Cup club before being named Essendon Head of Player Development in October that year.
