A talented rover who followed his father Richie to the club and worked his way through the Under 19s. Emselle was on the bench in Melbourne's 1964 premiership side and a regular for the next three seasons before injuring his knee and missing all of 1968 before returning for two games in 1969.

Emselle only played two senior matches in his last year, but was a regular for the Reserves, winning the Gardiner Medal for the best player in the competition and captaining Melbourne to a premiership. That year he captained the VFL Reserves in a match against New South Wales.

He joined VFA club Prahran in 1970 where he was a two time Best and Fairest and a premiership captain in 1973. Played there through 1975.
