The rover originally signed with St Kilda in 1960, but after his father complained about St Kilda's recruiting methods the Saints decided that he could have a clearance to any other club he liked if he didn't make it.

Despite the offer Jenkinson never left Hamilton, and instead signed for Melbourne in 1962 once St Kilda's hold on him expired. The 1963 pre-season match against Hamilton was played as part of the clearance for Jenkinson to join the Demons.

After three games over two seasons Jenkinson was dropped from Melbourne's list days after his last game in Round 5, 1963. He was cleared to North Melbourne but didn't play a senior game for them.

Originally expected to join Port Melbourne in 1964, he instead went to Williamstown, finishing second in their Best and Fairest that year. He remained with them through 1965.
