The grandson of Herb Matthews, and son of the Herbie who won a Brownlow Medal at South Melbourne, played his junior football with Melbourne from 1959 and stepped up to the senior list as a rover in 1961. He was never able to find a permanent spot in the side, and after four appearances in 1964, three off the bench, he followed in the footsteps of his father and moved to South.

He found more success with the Swans, playing 82 games and representing the VFL in the 1967 "Football World Tour" to Ireland and the USA with the Galahs.

He played at South the end of 1969, but after undergoing off-season knee surgery was unable to win his place back and was cleared to VFA side Dandenong in late April 1970 where he remained through 1972. Coached Burwood from 1977 to 1979.
