Having won the Donald Gift footrace in 1934 the speedy ruckman/defender joined Melbourne in the same batch of players that produced Ron Baggott and Norm Smith. He had a nightmare debut, conceding 12 goals to Essendon's Ted Freyer in his first match but played a total of seven games in his debut season before a broken leg in Round 15 finished his year.
After training with Geelong in the 1936 pre-season while resident in the area, Jones played just two games the next year, before becoming a fixture at centre-half back in 1937. He broke into the side early that year and retained his place right throughout the Fuschias ultimately disappointing finals campaign.
The next year he represented Victoria in two games and was voted the Most Improved Senior Player. After a rocky 1939 campaign where he was down on his best and spent time in the Seconds during the season Jones recovered to play in his first premiership side. During pre-season training he'd gone on the injured list due to blisters suffered in military training. A year later he repeated the feat, despite missing half the season with injuries or military duty.
At the end of that season Jones played in a Army Physical and Recreational Training School team in a wartime fundraiser against the Fire Brigade. It was his last game, as he went to war, serving throughout the rest of World War II.
Jones was a cousin of Colin Niven.
