Reserves player from 1962 to 1965, who then played at Frankston from 1966 to 1975. He had applied for a clearance to Hastings in June 1964.

Sat on the club committee in 1980 and 1981, and led a reform group which failed in an attempt to take the club over in 1985. He was at the head of a group that went to war with Billy Snedden, going as far as calling an extraordinary general meeting to try and topple Snedden's board. The incumbent fired back with a claim that Slade had bought his membership in June that year and ran a company that sponsored Carlton. Slade responded that his business couldn't sponsor the Demons as they were a direct competitor for major sponsor Drake.

Snedden resigned as President, and when time came for nominations for board positions at the AGM neither Slade or any of his team ran for election and the old board was re-elected unopposed. After the AGM he threatened to call another EGM for January but it never eventuated.

In 1986 Slade worked for a consortium attempting to establish a VFL side in Brisbane. That year he suggested restless members had called on him to challenge the board again, and that if the football club was his business he'd shut it down. In 1990 Slade served as executive director and part-owner of the Sydney Swans until resigning in July of that year with the Swans in financial turmoil.
