The cousin of Garry Lyon debuted as a rover for Hawthorn in 1983, but left Glenferrie Oval and played four seasons with SANFL side Central Districts before returning to the VFL with Melbourne. After seven games during the 1988 home and away season he was recalled for the Preliminary Final, keeping his spot for the Grand Final.

After 12 games in 1989, Flintoff missed the rest of the year after breaking down in a mid-week training session before the Elimination Final. His 1990 campaign was then derailed by hamstring injury suffered in Round 1, not returning until Round 10 for the second of six games. The next year was even less productive, playing Round 1, then not being seen again for his last three senior games from Round 14 to Round 16. He retired at the end of the season.

He is the cousin of Garry Lyon.
