Shortly before three-quarter time Danny Frawley was bundled over by one of his own teammates, gifting Darryl Cox what was to be his last goal for the Demons. In difficult conditions moments like that were the difference between the two sides. The struggling Saints, 1985's wooden spooners, showed patches against the team that finished one spot and three games above them that year.
In took until the final term for Melbourne to really break away, and the likes of future Demon David Grant - who kicked five goals in the first half - went missing when the pressure was on. Danny Hughes beat Grant easily after half time.
Alan Johnson, Brian Wilson and Adrian Battiston were Melbourne's best.
Two wins a row, and once again people were starting to talk about finals.
