The nephew of former Blue Ricky McLean was a midfielder who graduated from the AIS Academy and played Under 18 International Rules for Australia. Already touted as one of the highest rated youngsters in the country his stocks rose higher after a best on ground performance in the TAC Cup Grand Final, and he was picked by the Demons early in the 2003 Draft.
He broke into the side during 2004 and played nine games, retaining his spot through the finals in a midfield playing at the top of its games. Still eligible for the Rising Star award in 2005 he finished fourth overall and polled nine Brownlow Medal votes across 20 games - even holding a shock lead at one point early in the count.
McLean's 2006 season was interrupted by leg and hamstring injuries, and he was restricted to 18 games. He returned later that year to play his breakout game in the 2006 Elimination Final against St Kilda, but despite being one of his side's better players over the next few disappointing seasons never took the next step to superstar that many expected. Touted as a future captain by many he was involved in a number of off-field incidents before the 2008 season, but seemingly redeemed himself with a $10,000 donation to the 2008 Debt Demolition campaign.
On September 23, 2009 it was announced that McLean had requested a trade from Melbourne to Carlton, and that the two clubs had struck an agreement to trade McLean to the Blues for 2009 National Draft selection #11 - Jordan Gysberts.
After a rocky start to his Carlton career McLean finally cemented his place in the senior side midway through 2012 with a string of impressive performances and was a near permanent fixture in 2013, for the first time in his four years with the club, missing just one match and playing both finals. He added a further 16 games in 2014.
In 2015 he played for Darwin in the NTFL, and for Aberfeldie in 2016.
His grandfather Rod and grand-uncle Ken also played for the Blues.
