Lifelong Melbourne fan who had worn the number of Allen Jakovich on his jumper as a kid and achieved his dream of playing for the club when traded from Geelong at the end of the 2004 season. Moloney was picked up by the Cats from the Geelong Falcons in the 2003 Draft.

Traded to the Demons after 22 games in two seasons, Moloney was part of a complicated deal with also saw Brad Ottens go to Geelong. He made an immediate impact by kicking the first goal in Round 1, 2005 and was one of the sides best that year, playing 21 games.

In 2006 and 2007 he suffered from persistent groin injuries which reduced his gametime and effectiveness. He played just 17 matches over those two seasons.

In 2008 he played Round 1, but was injured and didn't return until Round 5. From then he played every game until the Round 11 Queen's Birthday clash against Collingwood in which he suffered a season ending shoulder injury.

After his first full pre-season for three years Moloney returned to his best football in 2009 and was runner-up to Aaron Davey in the Best and Fairest award and also racked up career high stats in most categories. His impact dropped off in the second half of 2010 because of injury, but Moloney was still a key contributor to the side - forming a lethal combination in the middle of the ground with All-Australian ruckman Mark Jamar. At the end of the year he signed a contract extension to take him to the end of 2012.

In April 2011 Moloney stepped down from his position as Vice Captain after it was revealed he had been out intoxicated during the early hours after Melbourne's win over Brisbane. He was later returned to the position.

On-field Moloney started the season strongly and was an early mover in Brownlow Medal betting markets, but as the Demons form flattened out so did his. Despite usually being one of his side's best Moloney had the indignity of being substituted at half time of the Round 19 debacle against Geelong after not registering a stat in the first two quarters. It was later revealed he had gone into the game under an illness cloud.

Playing every game of the season for the first time of his injury interrupted career, Moloney capped his year with his first Best and Fairest victory.

With a new coach taking the reigns Moloney was one of the club's previous leaders who were axed from the leadership group and his form took a turn for the worst. From a dominant 2011 he was a shadow of his former self and was dropped twice during the year before declaring that he would leave the club as a free agent.

Moloney became the first Melbourne player to leave as a free agent when he joined the Brisbane Lions in October 2012. He played 16 games in his first year with the club but only five in the second and retired late in the year while battling an achilles injury.

In 2015 he played for the Tiwi Bombers in the NTFL.
