The winger started his career with St Kilda in the VFA, played nearly a hundred games in total at the club and served as their inaugural VFL captain before leaving at the end of 1899. Shaw missed the 1900 season before joining Melbourne in April 1901.

His sole game for the Fuschias was a loss, coming after 29 career losses with St. Kilda. He holds the record for the equal fourth longest career in VFL/AFL history without having played in a win.
