The tallest player in the league at 198cm had some encouraging displays early in his career but never managed to use his height or marking potential to dominate opponents as expected.

In 1935 he blossomed and was selected in the Victorian interstate teams for games in Perth and Adelaide.

After Round 5, 1936 he announced that he was resigning to return to Finley, but he stayed in Melbourne, returned to play Round 11 and through to the Preliminary Final.

Taylor returned to Finley as coach for the 1937 season, despite suggestions he would return to Melbourne again to play full back. He recovered from an injury late in the season and began playing with Finley again from July.

His brother Norman trialled with Melbourne club before 1935 but did not play a senior game.
