One of the most widely travelled players in VFL/AFL history, Davis first played 11 seasons at St Kilda and had been a part of their first and only premiership side in 1966. During his time with the Saints he was renowned as a master of freakish goals, and had a casual approach to the game that was highlighted in 1971 when he couldn't be found to be sent on the ground because he was chatting to a spectator while drinking lemonade and eating a Violet Crumble.

Signing for Melbourne in 1976, Davis joined the Demons along with Shane Grambeau and a cash payment to secure the return of Carl Ditterich to the Saints. He never hit the heights of his St Kilda career at the Demons, but gave the club good service over two years before joining Essendon in 1978.

Davis played two years with the Bombers and one at Collingwood before playing for Latrobe in Tasmania then returning to St. Kilda. He coached the Saints for four games in 1987 as Darrel Baldock recovered from a minor stroke. He also played for Emerald.

His son Chad played 31 games for them between 2000 and 2002 and trained with the Demons after being delisted but was not drafted.
