Farrow served in World War I, serving as a signaller for the last two years of the war and one after in the Middle East, only returning to Australia in mid-1919.

He walked into a game with desperately undermanned 1919 Melbourne side and rapidly became one of the team's best midfielders - representing Victoria on two occasions.

After being lured to Carlton in 1922 as part of a post-grand final loss recruiting drive by the Blues he made his debut for them early in the season and held his spot for most of the year and into the finals. Farrow started the 1923 season as a key member of the Carlton side but saw his career ended after suffering severe concussion from a sickening head clash with a Richmond opponent at Punt Road in Round 3, 1923.

He enlisted in the Air Force during World War 2 and rose to the rank of Corporal while on home duty in Australia.
