Melbourne started as favourites, but were loose in defence and conceded seven first quarter goals to the visitors. They drew to within two points at half time, then conceded four goals to one in the third to be left 19 points down at the last break.
Despite a number of injuries, and playing three players short compared to the Lions, the Demons reduced the margin to seven points with an Angus Brayshaw goal on the siren.
Best were Gawn, Petracca and J. Smith. James Harmes dislocated a finger, Jay Kennedy Harris suffered bone bruising on his knee and Bayley Fritsch hurt his leg. Steven May was suspended for a week for careless contact, and Aaron vandenBerg fined twice, $2000 for striking Lachie Neale in the first quarter and $1000 for careless umpire contact in the final term.
