The result of an earlier Richmond vs Fremantle game meant Melbourne couldn't qualify for the Ansett Cup Semi Final, but Hawthorn could still qualify for a 10 goal win. They got that with plenty to spare, kicking six goals to two in the last quarter. The Demons were without the suspended Jeff Farmer, and injured Guy Rigoni and David Schwarz amongst 10 players missing from their best side, but were thrashed.
Hawthorn led by three goals at quarter time, before a devastating burst blew the margin out to 58 by the long break. By the end of the third quarter the Hawks had 100 more possessions than their hapless opponents and won easily.
Best were Thompson, Yze and Brown. Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin spent much of the game on the bench, and other senior players in Yze, Leoncelli and Febey had little influence.
Neale Daniher said "We were comprehensively beaten in all parts of the game. We just couldn't get our hands on the footy. I thought we were pretty lazy in our efforts to try and put any pressure on them"
