After a disappointing 1903 where they only narrowly avoided a wooden spoon, Melbourne kept much of their squad together and were rewarded with improved performances. The year began with four losses from the first five games, but four and three game winning streaks helped them finished three and a half games ahead of seventh placed Geelong. In Round 4 they played their first interstate VFL premiership match, beating Essendon at the SCG.

For the first time boundary umpires were permanently used in the VFL. Permit regulations were amended so players were only free to move clubs after three years out of the game, removing the opportunity to sit out for one year then change teams.

On Saturday 30 April, a match was played between 'new players' and 'old players'. The old players won 61-43.

Captain Bill McClelland retired at the end of the season.
