The red-hot Demons had won 10 of their last 11 before meeting Richmond in the Friday night game.
A big crowd saw a defensive struggle early, before Melbourne broke the match open with their run.
Russell Robertson kicked 4.4 and took a mark of the year contender in a game where he made Joel Bowden look awful. The Richmond man had the most disposals on the ground but managed to handball to Aaron Davey for a goal, play step-ladder to Robertson and accidentally hit Daniel Ward in the face during an attempted spoil.
Melbourne hit the post six times. Richmond, in contrast, only managed the feat once.
