Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, Watson debuted for Richmond in the VFA in 1897 and played there until being recruited to Carlton in 1902.

He played one season there, then returned to Richmond in 1903. He had another run at the VFL with Melbourne in 1904, debuting after his 30th birthday but only playing in the first game of the season.

Watson was cleared to North Melbourne in June 1904 and also played for Preston in 1908.

He had three other brothers who also played for Richmond.
