Ruckman who was a member of the Calder Cannons 2004 TAC Cup premiership side along with Lynden Dunn. He was invited to the draft camp that year but not selected and returned to the TAC Cup. Neaves overcame a fractured collarbone early in 2005 to play for Victoria Metro. Selected by Melbourne as a rookie, he played in the 2006 Sandringham premiership team, and appeared in 36 VFL games across two seasons before being delisted.

Neaves joined SANFL side West Adelaide in 2008, then spent two years with the VFL Northern Bullants from 2009. In 2009 he also played a game for Craigieburn. From 2011 to 2014 Neaves played for amateur side Old Scotch, before joining Shepparton United from 2015 until 2021. In 2022 he joined Donald.
