The Demons looked good early, but when the West Coast midfield took over they were able to do enough to register a victory.
Despite the dominance of the Eagles in the centre, Melbourne was just a point behind at the last change.
A lack of forward targets other than the dangerous Robertson, saw Melbourne's five match winning streak halted.
