The Demons were forced to visit Princes Park twice in a row, and suffered their second straight loss after a heavy defeat against the Bulldogs a week earlier. They regained Brent Grgic, Matthew Febey, Jamie Shanahan from injury but were soundly beaten.
Melbourne had the wood over Carlton, beating them once in 1997 and twice during 1998, but a blistering first quarter by the Blues set up their win. With intermittent showers falling the Demons couldn't kick a goal in the second quarter, and were never in the game. Four late goals flattered them as they dropped to 4-5 for the season.
Best were Viney, Tingay in his last game and Yze.
