The Demons brief run at the top of the ladder ended as they were beaten by the 2-6 Saints at Moorabbin. The Saints led at every change and withstood a half-hearted comeback in the last term to hold on for a comfortable victory.
Jim Stynes and Steve O'Dwyer, who had been two of their side's best players for the year, were matched by the Saints ruck division and the rest of the side was beaten by the direct football of the home side.
Best were O'Dwyer, Stynes and Wilson. Todd Viney was a late withdrawal from the side with a back injury and Sean Wight suffered an ankle injury during the match.
