The club had been thrown into crisis again after their 10 goal loss to Gold Coast the previous Sunday, and Mark Neeld saw his team respond with increased pressure. They were still comfortably beaten in the possession count, and Richmond were inaccurate in their kicking for goal, but the Demons showed greatly increased pressure.
After taking alead into quarter time the Demons were still only three goals behind late in the third term when Jack Riewoldt broke free of James Frawley and snapped a goal on the siren. They booted the first goal of the last quarter and the match was over.
Magner, Terlich and Davey were best. Rohan Bail replaced Jimmy Toumpas at the start of the third quarter after Toumpas suffered an ankle injury during the second term.
Nathan Jones, Jordie McKenzie and Luke Tapscott were reported and fined for engaging in a melee. They were fined $2100, $1200 and $1200 respectively. The club was also fined $2000 for runner Andrew Nichol intervening in the melee and standing on the foot of Richmond's Jake King.
