Melbourne went in with an unchanged side from the one that beat South Melbourne in Round 6.
The Tigers gambled with playing Robert Lamb, recalled from the reserves, at full-forward. It was not a position he played in the twos but they were rewarded with five goals.
The Demons kicked themselves out of the game against their MCG co-tenants with eight straight behinds in the first term while Richmond added 5.1. They got to 0.11 before finally kicking a goal, but by that point the Tigers already had eight and the match was over.
The two sides played out an uninspiring end to the game with the result already well decided. Greg Wells had a disappointing day, played in an unfamiliar half-forward flank role he managed just five kicks and two handballs before being interchanged in the final term.
Ray Biffin was one of the Demons big winners, thrashing Royce Hart until Hart injured a hamstring during the third quarter and had to leave the field. Also in the best were Alves and Hardeman. Wells and Smith were replaced by Baker and Osborne respectively in the last quarter.
