The home side stuck with their visitors early with superior pace but were beaten by Melbourne's aerial strength and strong ruck. Despite Melbourne's advantages the lack of a spearhead stopped them from breaking through Hawthorn's tenacious defence. On a heavy ground their only score in the first 15 minutes was a poster. They broke through for the first two goals of the game before Hawthorn narrowed the gap to eight with a late goal.

After Hawthorn got the first goal of the second term, Melbourne broke down with several more fruitless attacks before they finally overwhelmed the home defence. Hawthorn fought the game out strongly but the heavy ground sapped their pace and the Demons were able to win running away with double the score. Victory lifted Melbourne to second on the ladder.

Best were Rule, Denis Cordner and Dockett. McGivern replaced McGowan (stomach) and Carlon replaced Hiscock (thigh). Billy Deans was suspended for four weeks for striking.
