Melbourne recorded their second win of the year in a see-saw battle with the Shinboners. Despite many of their players not being at their best, they overcame an 11 point deficit in the last 10 minutes with three straight goals. It was a lucky escape after North had been the better side all day.
The sides played an even first quarter, with North goalling first before a double from Fred Fanning gave the Demons a slender lead at the first break. The home side then emerged with three straight goals to open a handy lead, before a run of goals at the end of the term restored Melbourne's advantage going into half time. The Demons continued to lead at the last change, before North rallied to open a handy gap. Eventually two from Fanning and one from Neenan won them the game. Victory took the defending premiers up to 9th of 11 teams.
Don and Ted Cordner were Melbourne's best, along with La Fontaine. 19th man Gibbs replaced Matthews (injured thigh) in the last quarter.
