The Demons dropped to 1-5 for the season with one of their lowest scores at the MCG since 1980, but despite only managing five goals for the game their performance was encouraging at times.
Despite conceding the first two goals of the match the Demons held Sydney to just two goals for the rest of the half, including being held goalless in the second quarter.
Melbourne was unable to capitalise on their strong defensive effort, adding just three goals in the second half as the Swans gradually pulled away to a comfortable win.
Best were N. Jones, Dunn and M. Jones.
Debutant Christian Salem replaced Neville Jetta during the third quarter.
Alex Georgiou was reprimanded for striking Sydney's Lance Franklin in the first quarter.
