Melbourne's perfect start to the season continued, but in a close game two moments of controversy might have cost the Magpies victory. Firstly Gavin Brown was denied a goal kicked just after the quarter time siren and then a Collingwood fightback from 25 points down in the last quarter was halted when Tony Shaw gave away a controversial free kick in the final minute.
It was the second week in a row where the Pies had been beaten by under a goal, and once again they were the victims of a contentious free kick. In another incident 30 seconds was lost on the game clock when a boundary umpire signalled the ball had gone out of bounds but was not noticed by the field umpire, the boundary umpire chased the field umpire down but the clock was not stopped.
Collingwood also had Melbourne's strong defence to thank for their predicament, with Sean Wight holding Saverio Rocca and David Neitz turning back a number of Magpie attacks.
Collingwood's defence also did well in the low scoring game. They were boosted by Allen Jakovich leaving the game with a calf injury, but also lost Jon Ballantyne to a serious knee injury. Jakovich had also argued with a goal umpire about where players could stand while a teammate was shooting for goal.
Best were Stynes, B. Lovett and Wight. Greg Doyle suffered a shoulder injury.
During the week the Chairman of the league's major sponsor CUB signalled that his company were going to wind back their support of the AFL due to their competitor Lion Nathan sponsoring Melbourne and St Kilda via their Tooheys brand.
