Melbourne's third win in a row put them right in the mix for the top four approaching the middle point of the season. They had been expected to beat Footscray, and had to come from behind at quarter time but for a side who hadn't played finals since 1928 any win was a step closer to breaking the drought.

Ron Baggott was reported once each for threatening behaviour and retaliating. He received a four match ban on the second charge. The player who struck him was rubbed out for six weeks. Melbourne's doctor claimed he saw Baggott doubled over but didn't see if he'd been hit, and that he threw out his arm as a defensive gesture or to retain his balance. Baggott also claimed he was trying to keep his balance but the tribunal rejected the evidence.

Eric Glass was reported for striking, but when the case came to the tribunal the umpire admitted incorrectly reporting Glass instead of Les Jones. He was not able to alter his report and the charge was withdrawn.

Best was Maurie Gibb.
