Since entering the competition in 1925, Footscray had never done better against Melbourne than a draw in 1929. Their bad run continued with another loss, this time by nearly ten goals to the unbeaten Redlegs.
While the scoring remained relatively even until half time and Footscray weren't disgraced they never looked like winning. The brilliant Redlegs had far too much for them, and when the game was over in the second half the visiting players relaxed and let Melbourne run away with the match.
The standard of play had been poor in the first half but deteriorated even further in the second, with the game over after Melbourne added 21 points without reply in the first half minutes of the third term. Near darkness during the last quarter made it even harder for the players to put on a spectacle.
Pemberton, Taylor, and Usher were Melbourne's best.
