The Demons registered their fourth straight win to start a season since 1994 with a win over the 2020 grand finalists. On a wet day, they were as much as 30 points clear early in the second quarter before Geelong launched a comeback, reducing the margin to 12 at the last change. Melbourne kicked three of the four last quarter goals to win comfortably.
Best were Petracca, Gawn and Oliver. Tom Sparrow replaced Steven May in the second quarter after he suffered an eye injury and concussion. Neville Jetta was fined $2000 for a dangerous tackle.
