Having become the second side to beat premiers St Kilda at Moorabbin in more than two years a week earlier, the Demons went into their clash with Barassi and the Blues full of confidence but they hadn't reckoned with a pre-match masterstroke by the Carlton coach.
With the rain already falling as his team arrived at the ground Barassi had new footballs thrown into a bathtub so his side could get the feel for a wet ball before the match. The idea was an overwhelming success as his side stormed to a 7.2 to 0.1 lead at quarter time, and the solitary point was rushed by a Carlton player.
The mind games between Norm Smith and his pupil Barassi continued at half time, by which point Melbourne had only shaved a goal off the lead, when Smith kept his side in the sheds for longer than usual. To counter the wasted time Barassi called his players together for a second half-time address as the Demons reentered the field.
Despite a reshuffle of positions by Smith the Demons were outscored eight goals to three after the long break, and the bad old days of 1966 when they struggled to put together a winning score were back. The only positive of the day came when Hassa Mann learned that his wife had given birth during the match.
Best were Johnson, Emselle and Williams. Anderson (concussion) was replaced by Comben in the first quarter. Johnson (thigh), Groom (cut mouth) and Whitton (cut mouth) were also injured but remained on the ground.
